The Ljubljana International Orchestra

The Ljubljana International Orchestra, established in 2012, unites outstanding young musicians from all over the world, including different cultures and social backgrounds, striving together for the highest performing goals. Young professionals acquire invaluable experience by playing together and cooperating with renowned musicians, conductors, and soloists to put on top performances. The repertoire of the orchestra covers symphonic works of the classical, romantic and late romantic periods, as well as contemporary works of the 21st century.

Annually, the orchestra invites new young professional musicians through an open call. Sincere enthusiasm, youthful energy, and irresistible courage are the basis for engaging in the great symphonic masterpieces which the musicians undertake in several working stages each year. Working stages are organised as an orchestra academy to provide for young professional musicians the experiences, life and work in a professional orchestra. Their experiences include concert preparation, concerts, concert tours, working with conductors and soloists, and performing at different concert halls and in front of diverse international audiences.

The Ljubljana International Orchestra has collaborated with soloists such as Wolfram Christ (viola), Branimir Slokar (trombone), Reinhold Friedrich (trumpet), Konstantin Pfiz (cello), Gregory Ahss (violin) and Gilad Karni (viola). The concertmasters of the orchestra are Gregory Ahss (concertmaster of the Camerate Salzburg and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra), Yuri Kalnits (soloists) and Janez Podlesek (concertmaster of the Slovenian Philharmonic). Konstantin Pfiz (cello), Knut-Erik Sundquist (double bass), Jože Kotar (clarinet), Igor Ahss (bassoon), Zora Slokar (French horn), Mihael Šuler (trombone) and Raymond Curfs (timpani) are also permanently active in the orchestra.

With successful performances in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, the United Kingdom, and Spain, the Ljubljana International Orchestra is a cultural ambassador of the capital of Slovenia. It portrays Ljubljana as a cosmopolitan city: a city of young people, a place of creativity and opportunity.
The artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra is Živa Ploj Peršuh.
